Organization and leadership
Part of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Geneva, the Department of Cellular and Molecular Biology is located at the Sciences campus in Geneva. It is funded by the Canton and the University of Geneva, with additional support from numerous national and international funding agencies. The Department comprises of 11 research groups, various technology platforms, and a team of technical and administrative support. The Department Director runs the institute together with a co-Director and an administrative management team.
Department Directorship
Prof. Orsolya Barabas, director
Hungarian by origin, Orsolya Barabas obtained her PhD in structural chemistry in October 2005 from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest, Hungary. She then moved to Bethesda, MD, USA, where she carried our her postdoctoral work at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institutes of Health (NIH), with Dr. Frederick Dyda. In 2009, Orsolya became a Group Leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany. Since 2021, she has been a Full Professor at the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Geneva.

Prof. Françoise Stutz, co-director
Born and raised in Switzerland, Françoise Stutz obtained her PhD at the University of Geneva in 1986. After two short postdocs at the FMI (Basel) and CMU (Geneva), she joined the lab of Prof. Michael Rosbash in Boston, USA. In 1997, she started her own group as an SNF professor at the Institute of Microbiology, University of Lausanne. In 2003, she moved to the Dept. of Cell Biology at University of Geneva, where she became professor in 2010. Françoise was elected EMBO member in 2013.
